ListenBrainz is back with your #yearinmusic (YIM) reports for 2023! Log in to ListenBrainz (LB) and click here to see your report, or here if you don’t have an account but want to see what we are banging on about.

See your year summed up in a flash new summary collage. Revisit and share your top artists, albums, and tracks from last year. Topped off with new statistics, the new browsable cover collage, links to friends, and playlists created just for you by our hopefully-still–benign machine algorithm.

This year we will also re-run the YIM pages in a few weeks – this means that if you have listens from 2023 stored in last.fm or libre.fm, it’s not too late! Use that LB importer to get your YIM soon.

New MetaBrainz translation platform

MetaBrainz project translation has officially moved from Transifex to Weblate! This is a big step forward, with improvements like single sign-on using your MusicBrainz account, proper attribution to translators, unified handling of glossaries, custom checks for MusicBrainz variable syntax, better integration with our development workflow, and supporting a libre software organization. We also tidied up the documentation and the forums about translation and more generally about internationalization of all aspects of MetaBrainz.

Fresher Fresh Releases

Have you ever wanted to see all the [genre] albums coming out next week?* Go do it in the new and overhauled ListenBrainz Fresh Releases! Live the dream!

React Q&A

If you are, like me, an avid follower of MusicBrainz server release notes, you will have been reading about a certain type of update for a number of years – React conversion tasks.

But, unlike me, you may know what React is! For the rest of you – happily drifting on the currents of ignorance with me – I have good news. The MusicBrainz team has sent a Software Engineer tugboat to pull us into the waters of knowledge. A tugboat by the name of yvanzo, who has agreed to answer some questions about React.

A year has flown by and once again the MetaBrainz team found itself in the MetaBrainz HQ in Barcelona, Spain, for #summit23. And once again we were munching on a mountain of international chocolates, hiking Mt Montserrat, bird-watching, groaning at terrible puns, testing out mayhem’s Bartendro cocktail robot (some of the team committing themselves too thoroughly to this testing), and of course discussing everything and anything MetaBrainz related. This year we had a longer summit, taking place over the week instead of the usual weekend, broken up into three days of presentations, followed by two days of hands-on ‘hacking’.

This means it’s time to strap in for a long post!

AIBrainz Playlist Generator (beta)

MetaBrainz as an organisation has never much dabbled in (artificial) intelligence, but a number of recent factors have led to the team doing some exciting behind-the-scenes work over the last few months.

Lately more and more potential contributors have come to MeB interested in working on AI projects, and with ListenBrainz we have an excellent dataset. With a current focus on playtesting and finetuning our playlist features we also have the perfect use-case.

Style Guideline Updates

If you’ve been lurking on our forums, you will know that our style guidelines have been receiving lots of attention lately! Both MusicBrainz docs and BookBrainz docs have been getting new additions and updates, and there’s still plenty being discussed. As I type these very words, there are greased-up editors in what’s known to us only as “the pit” – pitting their words, experience, and muscular bodies against each other in a bid for dominance over typographical punctuation.

Okay, okay, so there’s not really a pit, but here’s a rundown of some of the style discussions that are taking place, or have taken place, this year:
