AcousticBrainz: Making a hard decision to end the project

We created AcousticBrainz 7 years ago and started to collect data with the goal of using that data down the road once we had collected enough. We finally got around to doing this recenty, and realised that the data simply isn’t of high enough quality to be useful for much at all.

We spent quite a bit of time trying to brainstorm on how to remedy this, but all of the solutions we found require a significant amount of money for both new developers and new hardware. We lack the resources to commit to properly rebooting AcousticBrainz, so we’ve taken the hard decision to end the project.

Read on for an explanation of why we decided to do this, how we will do it, and what we’re planning to do in the future.

MusicBrainz Server update, 2022-02-14

This is a small release of bugfixes and improvements, since a lot of the team’s focus recently has been on improving code documentation and tests and other behind the scenes tasks. It does fix a couple bugs that had been reported multiple times though (the release editor entering bogus empty annotation edits, and the area selection dropdown sometimes failing to work properly) so hopefully it will still make some of your editing a bit better!

A new release of MusicBrainz Docker is also available that matches this update of MusicBrainz Server. See the release notes for update instructions.

MusicBrainz Server update, 2022-01-31

We took a break for the holidays and we really needed it, it seems, because we took a while to get back in action. But we’re back now, with a release that fixes a bunch of small bugs and gets rid of some annoyances. It also makes it easier to mark spammers as such, making them unable to edit and leave notes and also blocking their profile to hide any spammy links in one click. If you’re wondering why we don’t just delete the accounts, it’s because we want to keep them as fodder to train the still-in-development automatic spam-detecting SpamBrainz project.

A new release of MusicBrainz Docker is also available that matches this update of MusicBrainz Server. See the release notes for update instructions.

Picard 2.7.3 fixes macOS packages

Picard 2.7.3 fixes a packaging regression for macOS, which caused the app to be reported as damaged when trying to launch it. This affected especially users of macOS 10.13, see PICARD-2395 for details.

There are no other changes in this release. If you are running Picard on a different operating system or if you are using macOS but could start Picard without an error message than you don’t need to upgrade.

Picard 2.7.2 released

Picard 2.7.2 is a maintenance release for the recently release Picard 2.7, with fixes for reported issues and updated translations, but also a few small improvements.

MusicBrainz App 2021 Updates

Greetings, Everyone!

2021 has been a great year for the MusicBrainz Android App. The app has received updates regularly throughout the year!

Now that we are very close to 10,000+ users on the Playstore, it is evident that the app caters to the needs of a number of users, which is wonderful!

We have plans to introduce new features, involving those of ListenBrainz and CritiqueBrainz in the app. We are confident that the app serves its purpose of introducing everyone to the MetaBrainz world very soundly.

The app now features both a light and dark mode for the users!

During the end of the year, we have made some remarkable technical updates to the codebase by introducing Fastlane to the app. This eases the process for the developers and allows us to make a release with the click of a button. This means now we can have a production release every month, day, or hour.

Although going strong and steady, the MusicBrainz developers would love more contributors to join in and share their knowledge with us, while we dive deep into the world of music.

ListenBrainz presents: Your Year in Music

The ListenBrainz team has been wanting to provide a retrospective for its users for a few years now and this year we finally had enough resources to make it happen!

The Year in Music report includes a list of your top 50 releases for 2021, presented with cover art:

It also includes top lists, such as Your 50 most played songs of 2021 and Your top 50 artists of 2021 and spiffy map of your listening activity for 2021:

We also created 4 playlists for you to enjoy a retrospective of 2021. Three of these playlists aim to be playlists that feel comfortable for you, made up of tracks that you listened to this year. The Top Missed Recordings playlist, however, is a discovery playlist made from popular recordings that users similar to you listened to, but you didn’t. We make no guarantees that this playlist won’t give you at least little bit of iPod whiplash, which is why we’re presenting it as a discovery playlist that will require a bit more of your attention. However, don’t be discouraged—we’ve gotten a lot of positive feedback about this playlist!

And, this is not all yet—there are more things in the report for you to discover!

Picard 2.7 released

The Picard team is happy to announce that the final version 2.7 of MusicBrainz Picard is now available for download. MusicBrainz Picard is the official tag editor for the MusicBrainz database and helps you get your music collection sorted and cleaned up with the latest data from MusicBrainz.

This release brings many changes, including a completely new naming script editor, scripting improvements and AcousticBrainz submission. See below for the highlights.

MusicBrainz Server update, 2021-12-13

This release fixes a few small regressions introduced in the last month or so, and includes a few small improvements (including, finally, some degree of autoselection for Apple Music links).

Two new releases of MusicBrainz Docker are also available. The first one mitigated the vulnerability CVE-2021-44228 for local search. The second one matches this update of MusicBrainz Server. See the release notes for update instructions.
