ListenBrainz App 2.0.0: A Major Leap Forward

We are excited to announce the release of ListenBrainz 2.0.0, an update that we launched around 3 weeks ago with a lot of improvements, and bug fixes. This release saw significant contributions from community members, as well as new contributors making their debut in the ListenBrainz project.

What’s New in 2.0.0?

1. Improved Profile: The Profile Screen has been refined for a better user experience. Now the users don’t need to manually add their token from the website. Just login, and get started! Post that, if the user is interested in submitting listens to the server, they have an option to configure the notifications access and then manage the apps that are submitting listens.

2. Theme Fixes: An issue with theme switching has been addressed. Also, the themes and colors for the About and NewsBrainz Activities in Compose have been fixed.

3. Metadata and Cover Art Improvements: The ListenSubmitBody has been fixed, and more metadata has been added to enhance information richness. A fix has also been implemented to prevent fetching cover art URLs twice, optimizing the app’s performance.

4. Feature Additions: The listen player now includes a SeekBar. A ‘now playing’ feature has also been added to the app, enhancing user engagement. Moreover, the app can now receive events via WebSockets. Swipe on the listening now section and see that it shows Listening now (default is ListenBrainz, at first position) and Listening now on Spotify.

6. Fixes in App Starting and Spotify Remote: Issues regarding the app’s start have been resolved. A problem causing crashes with the Spotify remote has also been fixed, and the automatic disabling of Spotify has been removed for better user experience.

7. Refactoring and Additional Features: The app has been refactored to Jetpack Compose. An Android Go Scrobbler has also been added, for local listens submission if the notification access is not present or given.

ListenBrainz 2.0.0 represents a significant step forward in the project’s development. We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to everyone involved in this release, from the core development team to the newest contributors. Your efforts are helping to shape ListenBrainz into an even better music tool for users around the globe.

Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to improve and expand ListenBrainz. Happy listening!
