Ah, the lead up to Google Summer of Code (GSoC). Weeks of excitement, and the promise of a bright future. And lots of time to absolutely torpedo your chances of working with MetaBrainz or your open-source organisation of choice. Here’s how.
We’re are excited to announce that the MetaBrainz Foundation has been accepted into Google’s Summer of Code program for 2024! Summer of Code has been instrumental (pun intended) in the development of our projects and growth of our team over the years, so we’re pleased to be part of it for another round.
Ready to rock this summer coding with us? Start with carefully reading the terms for contributors. If you are eligible, go ahead and take a look at our Summer of Code landing page where you can find project ideas that we have listed for this year. Our landing page will also tell you what we require of our participants and how to pick up a project.
A very important note: We will not be considering any proposals from contributors who have not reached out to us before March 18.
Good luck to all who are interested in participating!
PS: If you’re feeling particularly adventurous, check out this entirely optional link for some extra motivation.
Hi, this is Prathamesh (IRC Nick: “Pratha-Fish”), an aspiring Data Engineer based in India with a sheer obsession for data, music, computers, and open-source software.
This year, I had the pleasure of being mentored by bitmap and reosarevok for this project and being guided at every hurdle by the incredible team at the MetaBrainz Foundation throughout this project. This blog summarizes my journey with MetaBrainz over the past 22 weeks.
Continue reading “GSOC ‘23: Automating Area Management in MusicBrainz”Hi, I am David Kellner (aka kellnerd), an electrical engineering student from Germany, who has finally found the time to participate in Summer of Code after four years of contributing data, bug reports and a bit of code to MetaBrainz projects (mostly to MusicBrainz and related tools such as userscripts).
Although I had mostly worked with MusicBrainz so far, I decided to apply for the BookBrainz importer project as I was already familiar with the underlying JavaScript technology and saw the huge potential of the idea to transform and import external datasets into the cleverly designed BookBrainz database schema. My proposed project was accepted by the MetaBrainz team and I have been working on it for the last six months under the mentorship of monkey.
This post gives an overview about my GSoC project and the challenges which I encountered during this summer.
Hello everyone!
My name is Vardan and I am a student at University of Alberta. I’ve always had a thirst for knowledge and a deep desire to make contributions to projects that have a global impact. I like listening to music and the idea of contributing to an adjacent music metadata project was captivating for me. I eagerly embarked on this journey, contributed my best, and am happy to have made a meaningful impact. This experience not only aligns perfectly with my academic pursuits but also presents a chance to collaborate with some of the brightest minds in the field.

I am Arshdeep Singh, a 4th year CS student from the University of Manitoba. I worked as a GSoC contributor for MetaBrainz on the Artist similarity graph project. I would like to dive into the details of the project and share my experiences of the same.

I am Vishal Singh (also known as Pixelpenguin on IRC). This year I participated in Google Summer of Code under MetaBrainz and worked on improving MetaBrainz Dataset Hoster repository. My mentor for this project was Kartik Ohri (lucifer on IRC). This post summarizes my contributions made for this project.

I am Shivam Awasthi, a recent graduate from IIT(BHU), Varanasi. As part of Google Summer of Code’23, I participated as a contributor for the MetaBrainz Foundation, where I worked on creating an Administration System for BookBrainz.
During this period, I was mentored by monkey, and ansh. With this post, I’ll be giving an overview of my project.

I am Jasjeet Singh (also known as jasje on IRC and 07jasjeet on GitHub). I am an undergraduate student pursuing information technology at UIET, Panjab University, Chandigarh, India. This year I participated in Google Summer of Code under MetaBrainz and worked on implementing a feed section in the new and upcoming ListenBrainz Android app derived from the ListenBrainz website. Along with the implementation of the original feed section, I have also added new features to the section that are currently available only on the app. My mentor for this project was Akshat Tiwari. (akshaaatt on IRC)

The competition was fierce this year. MetaBrainz received a huge amount of high quality applications. Narrowing it down gets harder every year – what these contributors did right is getting in early, engaging with our community, presenting specific and detailed proposals, and proving excellent communication skills and the ability to integrate our feedback back into their proposals.
