MusicBrainz Server update, 2024-09-17

This week we offer you a bunch of bug fixes and improvements before the team flies to India for the 2024 MetaBrainz summit. Especially noteworthy is another derat contribution, fulfilling a very popular improvement request to try and help editors reuse existing release groups instead of adding duplicates. Thanks derat. Therat.

A new release of MusicBrainz Docker is also available that matches this update of MusicBrainz Server. See the release notes for update instructions.

MusicBrainz Server update, 2024-09-02

While the team has been taking it slow in August, the volunteer derat has not! This is a small update with only four improvements, of which the biggest three are his work, including a way to reorder artists inside an artist credit.

A new release of MusicBrainz Docker is also available that matches this update of MusicBrainz Server. See the release notes for update instructions.

Thanks again to derat for having contributed to the code. Thanks to yindesu for having reported bugs and suggested improvements. Thanks to 4irefall, Early6431, Echelon666, KenParker_CN, Libra, MØĐĪ, Nom d’utilisateur, salo.rock, tanio, thephy, tkusano and Vaclovas Intas for updating the translations. And thanks to all others who tested the beta version!

MusicBrainz schema change release, 2024-05-13 (with upgrade instructions)

We’re happy to announce the release of our May 2024 schema change now! Thanks to all who were patient during yesterday’s downtime as we released everything to our production servers. Final testing for the mirrors also took some more time. Note that the initially announced upgrades for MusicBrainz search engine are just about to reach our beta website, and thus are postponed for mirrors too but can be expected for the few next releases.

This is a fairly small schema change release which mostly removes unused code and improves things behind the scenes. Of the schema change tickets, there are only two that will directly affect users as they browse and edit in MusicBrainz. The first (MBS-13421) adds genre collections, so that editors can for example make a list of their favorite genres. The second (MBS-13514) allows entering 6-digit label codes.

Additionally, derat gratified us with making aliases more visible in the website, and some other improvements, while yellowhatpro polished cover art priority.

Thanks to chaban, cyberskull, thomasegger, Toad King, and wileyfoxyx for having reported bugs and suggested improvements. Thanks to 0x1026, Anonymous, “ApeKattQuest, MonkeyPython”, AshPigeon, Autom, brtc, chaban, claybiockiller, danBLOO, darlingz, eigenric, Evergarden, GABG, hashflu, hesheng, julian45, kellnerd, LiarOnce, Philipp Wolfer, salo.rock, suming, Vac31., wileyfoxyx, x1ao4, xiaole_0714223, yangmouren, yyb987, and zemeles for updating the translations. And thanks to all others who tested the beta version!

Schema change release: May 13, 2024

MusicBrainz is announcing a new database schema change release for May 13, 2024. The main change will be to upgrade from PostgreSQL 12 to 16. Even though it isn’t database-related, Perl will also be upgraded from 5.30 to 5.38. Those will become the minimum required versions. Other changes are mostly clean-up and refactoring, with the exception of support for genre collections and (addendum) 6-digit label codes.

A few weeks after, the search engine will also be upgraded from Solr 7 to 9. Search indexes will have to be rebuilt on mirrors, which takes some time. Gladsomely, it will allow us to implement search improvements again.

MusicBrainz Server update, 2023-09-18

A tiny release this time. The main change if you are hosting your own server is that we’ve upgraded to Node 18 since Node 16 is EOL. For everyone else, now you can see if someone has been blocked from editing or leaving edit notes before you report them (look for “Restrictions” in their profile); this can also help explain why some user is not answering your notes.

A new release of MusicBrainz Docker is also available that matches this update of MusicBrainz Server. See the release notes for update instructions.

Thanks to  HibiscusKazeneko, jesus2099 and kakawup for having reported bugs and suggested improvements. Thanks to claybiockiller, mfmeulenbelt, outsidecontext, salo.rock and Vac31. for updating the translations. And thanks to all others who tested the beta version!

MusicBrainz Server update, 2023-08-07

This is another summer release with no new features, but it contains a fair amount of small bug fixes and improvements, many related to URL handling. The last user account related pages are also converted to React with this update.

A new release of MusicBrainz Docker is also available that matches this update of MusicBrainz Server. See the release notes for update instructions.

Thanks to atj, chaban, Cyberskull, darkshyne, derat, Freso, scoobert, Van de Bugger and yindesu for having reported bugs and suggested improvements. Thanks to atj and derat for submitting code patches. And thanks to all others who tested the beta version!

MusicBrainz Server update, 2023-07-10

This release makes a few small changes, including an updated set of basic edit icons that hopefully will be the start of a consistent icon set for MusicBrainz. Additionally, and sadly, opening voting for new editors has caused the creation of way too many sock-puppet accounts, so we have been forced to restrict voting for beginner editors again. Hopefully the two week wait is not too long; we’ll look into ways to improve beginners’ experience without helping bad actors in the future.

A new release of MusicBrainz Docker is also available that matches this update of MusicBrainz Server. See the release notes for update instructions.

Thanks to all others who tested the beta version!

MusicBrainz Server update, 2023-06-07

We have a small release this time, slightly delayed because of maintenance work on our servers for the last couple days. The most noticeable changes are probably 68 new locales available for aliases (for example, we can now specify an alias is in Latin language), and a fix to a bug where a small amount of tracks would not be shown in their release’s relationship editor and as such couldn’t have relationships added from that page.

A new release of MusicBrainz Docker is also available that matches this update of MusicBrainz Server. See the release notes for update instructions.

Thanks to salo.rock, UltimateRiff and yyoung for having reported bugs and suggested improvements. Thanks to salo.rock for updating the translations. And thanks to all others who tested the beta version!

MusicBrainz Server update, 2023-03-20

We’re hopefully back to a normal schedule after the crazy relationship editor testing period! That means we have the usual small amount of bug fixes and improvements this time, including a couple further fixes for small issues of said relationship editor which were not found during beta testing. We also have a text version of the list of historical MusicBrainz events that could only be seen before as bars on our timeline – which hopefully will help remind us to actually update that with new events on a regular basis.

A new release of MusicBrainz Docker is also available that matches this update of MusicBrainz Server. See the release notes for update instructions.

Thanks to CatQuest, chaban, mr_maxis, satanisch_opium, sound.and.vision and yyoung for having reported bugs and suggested improvements. Thanks to salo.rock and an anonymous Albanian translator for updating the translations. And thanks to all others who tested the beta version!

The git tag is v-2023-03-21-hotfix.
