Major upgrade for mirrors: November 25, 2024

MusicBrainz is announcing a major mirror upgrade for November 25, 2024. The minimum required version of Docker Compose will change from v1.21.1 to v2. Search will be upgraded from Solr 7 to Solr 9. Mirrors will likely require a reinstall from scratch, we will provide instructions by release day.

This upgrade is not going to break replication for existing mirrors, even mirrors that have enabled live search. However, Solr 7 dumps will no longer be available.

Minimum version requirements

  • MBVM-100: Upgrade the required version of Docker Compose to 2. The currently-required Docker Compose version 1.21.1+ is out of support since July 2023, so we’re updating the required version to the latest 2, which is now widely available, such as in the latest Ubuntu LTS.
  • SEARCH-685: Upgrade to Solr 9. The currently-running Solr version for mirrors is Solr 7, while the main website already upgraded to Solr 9 last June. Dumps are provided for Solr 7 so far. After this upgrade, they will be available for Solr 9 only.

  1. Unfortunately, the upgrade has been postponed. A new date will be announced soon in the next weeks. In the meantime, mirror owners are recommended to use Docker Compose v2 already.
